Staff loans and related parties: the exposures examiners always sample
How to tag, limit, and dual-control staff facilities, director loans, and employer concentrations in a Ghanaian MFI or hire purchase company.

Staff loans are a product, not a perk that lives in a spreadsheet. They must be tagged, priced, deducted through payroll, and limited. Director and related-party facilities need a higher dual-control bar. Employer concentrations — a whole market or a single cocoa buyer — should be visible before origination, not after a default cluster.
OrbitMFI stores related-party flags on the client file and can block origination that would breach policy unless a named override is logged. That is the difference between a rule and a sermon.
Payroll deduction is not optional theatre
If you run payroll on the same core, staff-loan instalments should deduct on the run, not wait for a cashier to remember. Missed staff instalments are a conduct issue as well as credit.
Sampling packs
Examiners will ask for the staff-loan register, related-party list, and large exposures. If producing that pack takes a weekend, encode it. Export from posted data.
- Flag staff, directors, and connected persons on KYC.
- Limit by policy and show utilisation at origination.
- Keep overrides in the audit trail.
- Reconcile payroll deductions to loan receipts automatically.
Culture
A CEO facility that skips the committee is how cultures rot. Software cannot replace the board, but it can make skipping the committee visible.
