USSD and WhatsApp in Ghanaian collections: cheap channels, expensive mistakes
When to use SMS, USSD self-pay, and WhatsApp for repayments in Ghana — and how to keep the contact log inside the core instead of on officers' phones.

Ghanaian customers live on WhatsApp. Collectors know this and will use it whether you bless it or not. The institution's job is to make an official channel easier than a personal number, to log every contact, and to stop the moment a receipt posts. USSD self-pay is often the cheapest completion of that journey — if the amount due is unambiguous.
SMS for due-day, USSD for pay, calls for money
A due-day SMS with an amount and a USSD or Paystack link is cheap. A call is expensive and should be reserved for high balances. WhatsApp templates, if used, must come from a business account the compliance team can see — not from 'Kwame's other phone'.
Conduct still applies on chat
Threats, public shaming in group chats, and messages at 11 p.m. are still conduct failures when they happen in WhatsApp. Script the allowed templates. Record them in the core. OrbitMFI's contact log is meant to include those channels so a complaint has a timeline.
Stop messaging on receipt
This is the same reconciliation point as MoMo. If WhatsApp keeps pinging after payment, you will train customers to block you. Pause outbound on posted instalments.
